SVPs are typically released from prison and may be subject to court-approved restricted release to the community. SVP Prosecutors identify and interrupt those offenders most likely to commit new crimes, contributing to community safety. Sexually violent predators are housed at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island unless released to the community under court approval. Duties We seek attorneys with demonstrated courtroom experience and strong legal writing and oral advocacy skills. SVP attorneys practice primarily in superior court, with occasional appellate work in the Washington State Court of Appeals, the Washington State Supreme Court and federal courts. SVP cases are civil in nature, with some criminal-law considerations. Duties include discovery under civil rules, depositions, interrogatories and requests for production, jury or bench trials, and extensive motion practice. Work in the SVP Unit is demanding but rewarding, and contributes to a collegial and inclusive work environment with attorneys, paralegals and investigators dedicated to safer communities. Historical experience in this role provides valuable opportunities for future positions within the AGO and beyond. Qualifications The positions require the ability to work a hybrid in-office and remote schedule in the downtown Seattle AGO office, with travel around the state for trial preparation and court hearings/trials. Preferred candidates will have: Significant courtroom experience and/or appellate clerkship or appellate experience Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills Strong interpersonal skills for an inclusive, collegial setting Superior motivation and organizational skills The ability and desire to develop complex litigation skills Applicants must be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school or have completed the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program and be licensed to practice in Washington. Applicants who meet other qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.
