Job Description
We are seeking a talented senior technical writer with 10+ years of experience with planning, writing, and curating help files, manuals, work aids, training material, and other assets in support of software development and enterprise applications within a U.S. Government environment. You will play an essential role in communicating complex technical information with clarity, ensuring that our solution is easily understood and adopted. This role can be primarily remote with ability to travel to Alexandria, VA 2 or 3 days a week based on the client requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
• Content Creation and Documentation: Transform complex ideas into clear, concise, and engaging content tailored to specific audiences. Develop high-quality, user-friendly documentation such as user manuals, technical reports, policies, and case studies.
• Research and Analysis: Conduct audience analysis and gather feedback from end-users, subject matter experts (SMEs), and stakeholders to improve the readability and usability of technical content. Analyze user experience (UX) feedback to refine documentation.
• Editing and Quality Assurance: Proofread, review, and ensure all content meets organizational standards for clarity, tone, style, and technical accuracy. Edit, format, and organize content for maximum impact and accessibility.
• Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product owners, scrum masters, developers, designers, and others to ensure technical documents accurately reflect project requirements. Incorporate feedback and resolve disagreements effectively when collaborating across teams.
• Design and Visual Communication: Use multi-media authoring tools to create help files, web pages, graphics, diagrams, tutorials, and other work aids that enhance solution adoption and usability. Implement best practices in information design, architecture, and graphic design.
• Tools and Technology: Utilize content management tools like Office365, Adobe Creative Cloud, Confluence, SharePoint as well as Markdown or HTML to develop and manage content.
• Project Management: Plan, organize, and manage technical documentation projects to meet deadlines. Engage in iterative updates to documentation aligned with product iteration cycles.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to clarity, purpose, and tone. Comfortable adjusting language to meet the needs of both technical and non-technical audiences, particularly for U.S. Government employees and users.
• Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with product development, project management, programming languages, GitOps, ChatOps, and Human Centered Design. Has experience with content management systems such as SharePoint, Confluence or open-source systems such as GitDocs. HTML and Python experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of software design concepts and an ability to interpret and present them effectively. • Research Skills: Proficient in conducting audience analysis and data collection to create targeted documentation. Experience with usability testing and analyzing metrics to improve documentation.
• Writing Proficiency: Experience creating a wide range of technical content (e.g., user manuals, policies, case studies). Proficient with industry-standard tools for documentation.
• Editing and Proofreading: Exceptional eye for detail, formatting, and compliance with brand standards.
• Design Expertise (Preferred): Knowledge of graphic design fundamentals and experience with tools like Adobe Creative Suite. Ability to visually represent complex data (e.g., graphs, infographics).
• Collaboration and Teamwork: Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to resolve conflicts and adapt communication styles to a diverse team. Preferred Qualifications:
• Must be US Citizen with minimum DoD Secret clearance is required prior to start date
• Able to meet DoD 8570 IAT II Certification requirements, for example have a Security+ certification to allow access to IT systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Education, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in technical writing or a related field.
• Certification in Web Design, Adobe, Robohelp, or similar is a plus.
• Prior USCG or Navy service is a bonus, as is experience in the maritime community.
